Trane Odyssey 7.5 Ton Two-Stage Commercial Split Air Conditioning System – 460V 3-Phase | R-454B

The Trane Odyssey 7.5-ton two-stage commercial split air conditioning system in 460V 3-phase configuration delivers 11.5 EER and 14.8 IEER — the peak efficiency ratings in the 7.5-ton Odyssey split lineup — on the higher-voltage electrical service standard in larger commercial buildings and institutional facilities. At 90,000 BTU of cooling capacity across two stages, this is the right system for large commercial spaces on 480V nominal 3-phase service with a separate heating system in place, where cooling load dominates the operating year and maximum part-load efficiency is the primary driver of long-term operating cost.

The 460V cooling-only configuration combines two independent efficiency and cost advantages — 460V electrical infrastructure savings and cooling-only refrigerant circuit optimization — making it the lowest total cost of ownership configuration in the 7.5-ton Odyssey lineup for buildings where both conditions apply.

Note that this is a cooling-only system. For applications requiring year-round heating and cooling at 7.5-ton capacity on 460V service, see the Trane Odyssey TWA 460V heat pump series.

460V 3-Phase + Cooling-Only at 7.5 Tons

At 7.5-ton capacity the combined advantages of 460V electrical configuration and cooling-only circuit optimization are most pronounced compared to smaller tonnages:

  • Largest absolute amperage reduction at 460V: A 7.5-ton unit on 460V draws roughly half the amperage of the 208/230V equivalent — at this capacity that means substantially smaller wire gauge, conduit fill, and overcurrent protection on what are typically long rooftop equipment runs. On multi-unit projects with several 7.5-ton systems across a large building or portfolio, the electrical infrastructure savings compound significantly across every circuit
  • Voltage stability under 7.5-ton compressor load: Inrush current from a 7.5-ton compressor starting at full second-stage capacity on a long 208/230V run produces meaningful voltage sag — stressing motor windings at every start and degrading efficiency under sustained load. 460V service maintains stable voltage at the unit under full second-stage output, protecting compressor longevity and sustaining rated EER through years of commercial operation
  • Cooling-only efficiency premium over heat pump: The 7.5-ton cooling-only system achieves 11.5 EER and 14.8 IEER versus the 460V heat pump equivalent's 11.0 EER and 14.1 IEER — a 0.5-point EER advantage and 0.7-point IEER advantage that translates to measurable annual energy cost savings in large commercial buildings running 2,000+ cooling hours per year
  • Engineer-specified combination: Mechanical engineers routinely co-specify 460V cooling-only split systems with separate gas or hydronic heating on large commercial projects where 480V electrical distribution is already in place — combining the electrical infrastructure cost savings of 460V equipment with the cooling efficiency premium of the cooling-only refrigerant circuit

Two-Stage Capacity Control

At 7.5 tons, two-stage operation delivers its strongest performance advantages over single-stage alternatives — and the 14.8 IEER rating reflects the full magnitude of those advantages under real-world commercial operating conditions:

  • First stage runs at approximately 67–70% of full capacity — long enough cycles to remove humidity effectively from large open-plan spaces, distribute conditioned air evenly, and avoid the demand charge spikes generated by repeated full-capacity compressor starts during business hours
  • Second stage engages only when peak summer load genuinely requires full 90,000 BTU output — protecting compressor longevity and maintaining efficiency during the partial-load conditions that dominate most commercial climates' annual cooling hours
  • Demand charge management: On commercial utility accounts with demand metering, a 7.5-ton single-stage compressor cycling at full capacity during peak business hours generates significant demand spikes. First-stage two-stage operation substantially reduces these spikes — lowering the demand charge component of the monthly utility bill independent of total energy consumption, a particularly meaningful cost factor in large commercial buildings on commercial rate schedules
  • Humidity control at scale: At 7.5-ton capacity, single-stage equipment cycling a large space to setpoint before adequate dehumidification occurs is one of the most common occupant comfort failures in commercial buildings. Two-stage first-stage operation's longer run cycles remove substantially more moisture per operating hour — a measurable comfort and indoor air quality advantage in retail, medical, hospitality, and institutional applications where indoor humidity directly affects occupant experience
  • 14.8 IEER vs. 11.5 EER: The 3.3-point spread between full-load and part-load efficiency at 7.5 tons represents significant annual energy cost savings versus single-stage equipment at equivalent nominal capacity — particularly in warm-climate markets where cooling hours dominate the operating year and demand charges represent a substantial portion of the monthly commercial utility bill

R-454B at 7.5-Ton Scale

At 7.5-ton capacity the refrigerant charge is substantial — making the long-term compliance and cost implications of refrigerant selection more significant than at smaller sizes. R-454B's GWP of 466 is approximately 78% lower than R-410A's 2,088. For commercial building operators and property managers responsible for 7.5-ton systems over a 15–20 year service life, the compliance advantage of R-454B avoids the direct cost of refrigerant conversion, the operational disruption of equipment replacement on a commercial cooling-critical schedule, and the rising service cost of R-410A as EPA phase-down rules tighten supply and pricing.

R-454B is A2L-classified under ASHRAE 34. This system is engineered and listed for compliant A2L use per current UL and AHRI standards. Verify local AHJ requirements for A2L refrigerant in your specific occupancy type and jurisdiction prior to installation.

Trane Odyssey Commercial Engineering

  • Climatuff® Two-Stage Scroll Compressor: Factory-integrated two-stage capacity control on Trane's commercial-duty Climatuff scroll platform — optimized for cooling-only operation on 460V service without the efficiency trade-offs of heat pump reversing valve circuits. At 7.5-ton capacity on 460V service, compressor platform selection and motor winding integrity at rated voltage are the defining factors in long-term system reliability and service cost
  • Spine Fin™ Outdoor Coil: Aluminum spine fin geometry delivers maximum heat transfer surface area while resisting debris accumulation — sustaining the 11.5 EER rating through years of commercial rooftop operation where coil fouling is a persistent efficiency drag on competing coil designs. At 7.5-ton capacity, sustained coil efficiency directly impacts both operating cost and peak-load capacity on the hottest days of the year
  • WeatherGuard™ Hardware: Stainless steel fasteners, UV-stabilized cabinet panels, and factory-applied coil coating engineered for long-term outdoor durability across the full range of US commercial climate zones — from high-humidity Gulf Coast rooftops to high-UV Southwest ground-level installations

Which system is better Gas system or Heat Pump system? (Video)

Heat Pump System:
Heats and cools your home using electricity and outdoor air. More energy-efficient, lower operating costs, environmentally friendly, and works well in moderate to warm climates. Qualifies for rebates and tax credits.

Gas System:
Uses natural gas for heating and requires a separate air conditioner for cooling. Better for extreme cold climates where heat pumps are less efficient. Higher fuel costs but may have lower upfront equipment expenses.

Best choice depends on: Your climate (heat pumps excel in Georgia), budget for upfront costs, long-term energy savings goals, and environmental priorities. Heat pumps typically save more money over time through lower utility bills. Contact our team for a personalized recommendation based on your home and location.

How do I know I am choosing the appropriate system?

The best way to ensure you've chosen the right system is to match it with your home's cooling and heating needs. Consider your home's square footage, climate, insulation, and the number of zones you want to control. You can look at the sizing guide here, and our support team can help you narrow down options based on your specific situation. If you're unsure, we recommend consulting with a professional HVAC technician who can perform a detailed load calculation for your home.

Should I choose a Split System or a Packaged System for my home? (Video)

Split System: Features separate indoor and outdoor units ideal for homes with basements or crawlspaces. Offers higher SEER ratings, better efficiency, and more customization for placement.

Packaged System: Contains all components in one outdoor unit, perfect for smaller homes or limited indoor space. Easier to install with lower maintenance needs.

Quick decision: Have indoor space? Choose split for superior efficiency. Limited space? Choose packaged.

What's the best way to calculate the correct capacity and tonnage for my home?

HVAC sizing is measured in tons, where one ton equals 12,000 BTUs of cooling capacity. While you can estimate using square footage (roughly 600 square feet per ton for residential homes), the most accurate method is a professionalManual J load calculationthat considers your home's insulation, orientation, windows, climate, and occupancy patterns.

Tonnage => BTU/Hour
1 ton => 12,000 BTU
1.5 ton => 18,000 BTU
2 ton => 24,000 BTU
2.5 ton => 30,000 BTU
3 ton => 36,000 BTU
3.5 ton => 42,000 BTU
4 ton => 48,000 BTU
5 ton => 60,000 BTU

Home Size (Sq. Ft.) => Recommended Tonnage
750–1,000 => 2 tons
1,050–1,400 => 2.5 tons
1,450–1,700 => 3 tons
1,750–1,900 => 3.5 tons
1,950–2,200 => 4 tons
2,250+ => 5 tons

Important: Undersizing leads to inadequate cooling; oversizing wastes energy and money. When in doubt, consult a professional. Reach out to us at sales@acunitsforless.com or via Live Chat.

What's the best way to calculate the correct capacity and tonnage for my home for multiple units?

If you're planning multiple units (for a ductless mini-split system or zoned setup), calculate the cooling needs for each zone or room separately using the same Manual J methodology. Add the tonnage requirements for each area to determine your total system capacity. For example, if your master bedroom is 800 sq. ft. (requiring 1.5 tons) and your living room is 1,200 sq. ft. (requiring 2 tons), you'd want a 3.5-ton system or a multi-zone setup with smaller indoor units. Our team can help you design a custom multi-zone layout based on your home's layout and needs.

Information regarding Trane Residential Systems:

Currently due to regulations, we are only selling and shipping Trane Residential units in the state of Georgia.

What is SEER and SEER2?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio-it measures how efficiently an air conditioning or heat pump system operates over an entire cooling season.

SEER2 stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2-it's the updated, more accurate standard introduced in 2023. SEER2 provides a more realistic assessment of real-world performance by testing at various load levels and temperature conditions.

What is the difference between SEER and SEER2? (Video)

The key difference is how the systems are tested.

SEER testing used fixed temperature conditions and didn't fully account for the external static pressure in typical duct systems.

SEER2 testing is more comprehensive-it accounts for varying temperatures (65°F to 104°F), includes partial-load efficiency testing to mimic real-world fluctuating demands, and uses proper duct system static pressure to prioritize furnace blower efficiency.

Important to know:SEER2 ratings are typically 4–7% lower than SEER ratings for the same system because the testing is stricter and more realistic. For example, a 16 SEER system might have a SEER2 rating of around 14. Don't compare old SEER numbers directly to new SEER2 ratings-they use different standards.

Are there any rebate programs available?

Yes! The Home Energy Improvement Program through Georgia Power offers incentives for qualified customers in the state of Georgia purchasing high-efficiency HVAC systems like ductless mini-split heat pumps or heat pump water heaters. Our salesperson share incentive details at purchase to help you save on premium equipment. Additional rebates may be available through your local utility company or federal programs-visit Energy.gov to check your area. Ask our team for your AHRI certificate to submit rebate applications.

Note:To qualify, you must be a Georgia Power customer.

Where can I get an AHRI certificate?

You can find the AHRI certificate on the AHRI website here.

How to find a compatible split system?

For split systems, your indoor unit must be properly matched with your outdoor unit (condenser) to achieve the rated efficiency and ensure system longevity. You can always visit the AHRI website and use their AHRI Matchup tool to find a compatible system. The best way to find help is to reach out to us via Live Chat or email sales@acunitsforless.com.

What is the R-32 refrigerant? (Video)

R-32 is a single-component, low-GWP refrigerant used in modern HVAC systems as an eco-friendly alternative to R-410A. It has a Global Warming Potential of 675-one-third lower than R-410A (GWP 2,088)-and offers zero ozone depletion potential. R-32 delivers approximately 10% better energy efficiency and improved heat transfer, requires 30% less refrigerant charge, and has been safely used in over 160 million units worldwide since 2012. It's classified as A2L (mildly flammable) and represents the next generation of environmentally sustainable cooling technology.

Why choose R-454B refrigerant? (Video)

R-454B is the next-generation, environmentally friendly refrigerant with the lowest Global Warming Potential (GWP of 466) compared to R-32 and R-410A. It maintains high efficiency, meets current EPA regulations, and ensures your system remains compliant for years to come. Choosing R-454B means investing in future-proof technology that's better for the environment and your wallet.

Why did we stop selling R-410A refrigerant systems?

Effective January 1, 2025, the EPA enacted a regulation prohibiting manufacturers from producing or importing new HVAC systems using R-410A. This is because R-410A has a very high Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 2,088-meaning it contributes significantly to climate change if released into the atmosphere.
