    GE PTAC Air Conditioners

    (156 products)

If you've stayed in a hotel, you've used one of these. It's the boxy unit under the window that kicks on at 2 a.m. GE PTAC air conditioners are a newer, quieter take on that idea, and they're found in hotels, apartment buildings, senior living communities and plenty of offices. You can see the rest of GE's lineup on our GE brand page. This collection sticks to the Zoneline PTAC models.

What Is a PTAC Air Conditioner?

PTAC is short for packaged terminal air conditioner. The whole system lives in one box that passes through an outside wall. One side faces the room, the other faces outdoors.

There's no ductwork involved, which is the main appeal. PTAC air conditioner units let every room run on its own, so the guest in 204 can keep it at 66 while 205 sits empty with the unit off. Across a building full of GE PTAC units, that adds up quickly on the power bill. If you're also weighing vertical units that hide in a closet, the full PTAC and VTAC collection puts both side by side.

    GE Zoneline PTAC Series

Zoneline is the name GE uses for its PTAC line. Any GE Zoneline PTAC you see here works the same way at the core. Where the series split is in how they heat and what extras they carry.

    Zoneline 4500 Series

Cooling with electric heat. The Dry Air 25 models in this series pull 20% to 35% more moisture out of the air than standard Zoneline units, which helps a lot in humid climates. Corrosion-protected versions are made for buildings near the coast.

    Zoneline 6500 Series

These run as heat pumps and include a boost heat option that adds electric heat when the room needs it. A few models come with UVC light, and corrosion protection is available here too.

    Inverter Heat Pump Models

The newest units change compressor speed to match the room instead of switching fully on and off. They come with WiFi and use R-454B refrigerant.

    Makeup Air Models

Some buildings need outdoor air brought into each room. Makeup air models handle that, and you'll find them in both the 4500 Digital series and the inverter line.

    Heat Pump vs Electric Heat

    • Heat pump: Moves heat from outside into the room rather than making it, so it costs less to run in spring and fall. On colder days, boost heat adds electric heat to keep up.

    • Electric heat: Uses resistance coils every time. Simple and a good fit for warm states where heat runs a few weeks a year.

In Georgia or the Carolinas, either works. Go much farther north and a PTAC air conditioner with heat pump operation usually earns its keep on utility costs.

    Choosing GE PTAC Air Conditioners

Most buyers sort GE PTAC air conditioners by five things:

    • Voltage: 208/230V covers most models in this collection. There are also 265V models, common in commercial buildings, and a small group of 115V units.

    • Capacity: Most models fall between 7,000 and 15,000 BTU. Bigger rooms, more glass and afternoon sun all push the number up.

    • Heating type: Heat pump or electric, based on your winters.

    • Corrosion protection: Worth having within a few miles of the coast.

    • Refrigerant: The newer heat pump, electric heat and inverter models run on R-454B.

    Matching Units Across a Property

Hotels and apartment buildings almost never buy just one. Keeping the same series, voltage and size in similar rooms means one set of filters and one control layout for the maintenance team. Filter this collection by voltage and BTU and you can line up GE PTAC units with what's already on your walls.

    FAQs

Q1. Where are GE PTAC air conditioners used?

GE PTAC air conditioners are used mostly in hotels, apartments, assisted living, dorms and offices.

Q2. Is a PTAC air conditioner with heat pump better than electric heat?

In places with real winters, usually yes, since it heats for less. In hot climates where the heat barely runs, electric models keep things simple.

Q3. What sizes do PTAC air conditioner units come in?

The GE models here run from 7,000 to 15,000 BTU. A standard hotel room is often fine at 9,000. Suites and corner rooms tend to need 12,000 or more.
